Project: Joie de Vivre bio picture

Welcome to Project: Joie de Vivre!

I'm a wedding photographer who is also fired up and passionate about
helping others find their joie de vivre, "the joy of living."

When studying abroad in France in college, I learned a lot about the world and how life should be enjoyed like a fine glass of wine or a delectable piece of chocolate. How can we enjoy life if we are caught up doing what we must instead of finding what we love?

What makes you happy? What
lights a fire inside? This blog is an exploration of all that. As the title suggests, this is an ongoing project. A work in progress. And I hope you may be inspired to find your Joie de Vivre. The joy of living.

December 21 – Future Self

Prompt: Imagine yourself five years from now. What advice would you give your current self for the year ahead? (Author: Jenny Blake)

Be brave.

Write out your goals and pursue them with full force and full passion.

Follow through.

Don’t procrastinate.

Start now.

Believe in yourself.

Take a risk. Take a chance.

Work within the arc of your creativity.

Go to the edge of your comfort zone.

Life is too short to wonder “What if”.

Live loud and proud.

Say “I love you”.

Say “Thank You”.

It’s okay to fail.

December 20: Beyond Avoidance

Prompt: What should you have done this year but didn’t because you were too scared, worried, unsure, busy or otherwise deterred from doing? (Bonus: Will you do it?) (Author: Jake Nickell)

On the boring front, I should have hired an accountant to do our taxes. Taxes are a scary thing to me, and I didn’t want to do them wrong especially since the complexity of our taxes increased about eight-fold. I believe that eventually we’ll seek professional help to answer our tax questions.

December 19 – Healing

Prompt: What healed you this year? Was it sudden, or a drip-by-drip evolution? How would you like to be healed in 2011? (Author: Leonie Allan)

I believe that prayer healed me in 2010. I don’t think I fully understood the power of prayer until this year. I think it was more of a drip-by-drip evolution, where with prayer and reflection, I was able to heal. Heal my relationship with myself and with God.

I want to heal my finances, if that makes sense. I don’t want to be a slave to my finances. I want slowly, but surely pay off my debt, and reduce my worry. I want to learn that if my business will not be taking off for a time, that if I need to find a job, that I do.

December 18: Try

Prompt: What do you want to try next year? Is there something you wanted to try in 2010? What happened when you did / didn’t go for it? (Author: Kaileen Elise)

Growth. I want to continue to grow my business. I want to continue to foster relationships with other vendors so that we may work together towards a common goal. I want to collaborate with vendors to create inspirational photo shoots for future brides. I want to help women feel confident and beautiful through boudoir photos.

I wanted to shoot some boudoir in 2010, but it did not happen. I did not go for it because I could not find anyone to do portfolio shots with. But in 2011, I feel like it will happen and I can grow this part of my business.

December 17: Lesson Learned

Prompt: What was the best thing you learned about yourself this past year? And how will you apply that lesson going forward? (Author: Tara Weaver)

I’ve learned that I have the ability to take risks. To feel the fear and do it anyway. And this realization has lead to some bold moves. I’ve been able to accomplish more this year in my business than I could have ever guess last year. Going forward, I want to take risks to create the life I want to lead. I want to be bold, even if it’s scary. Even if I fail, at least I will have tried.

December 16: Friendship

Prompt: How has a friend changed you or your perspective on the world this year? Was this change gradual, or a sudden burst? (Author: Martha Mihalick)

I’ve had the opportunity to witness friends set out to accomplish some major goals. Watching and observing their progress and success this year has shown me that goals are possible to achieve if you break them down into specific, actionable steps, and take it bit by bit. These were attendees of the Making Things Happen crew, and I’ve seen some amazing chance and perspective this year. It feels like my perspective was shifted in a sudden burst. But that sudden burst is invigorating and motivating!

December 15: 5 Minutes

Prompt: Imagine you will completely lose your memory of 2010 in five minutes. Set an alarm for five minutes and capture the things you most want to remember about 2010. (Author: Patti Digh)

  • Decorating our first home
  • I want to remember my first official year of business
  • My first Texas booking
  • Watching two good friends get married and being there to photograph it
  • Visiting my mother-in-law’s hometown for the first time for her 50th birthday
  • My first dinner party as a married couple
  • My renewed relationship with God and learning to pray
  • Learning to live in a new state away from all things familiar, including family and friends
  • Making new friends and carving a life for myself here in Texas
  • My first encounter with a dumb drunk girl and a dash of jealousy
  • Feeling the fear and doing it anyway
  • Chasing after my dreams with a full heart and encouraging others to do the same

December 14 – Appreciation

Prompt: What’s the one thing you have come to appreciate most in the past year? How do you express gratitude for it? (Author: Victoria Klein)

My husband. Some say the first year of marriage tests your relationship, and I have to admit that being married has posed some major changes in my life. But honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. My husband cares for me unlike anyone else, and I truly appreciate him for it. I may not always tell him, or let on, but I want to do better in letting him know exactly how much I love him and appreciate all he does for me.

December 13: Action

Prompt: When it comes to aspirations, it’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen. What’s your next step? (Author: Scott Belsky)

I have a ton of ideas. Now, if I’m going to make those ideas happen, I need to starting taking the steps towards those goals.

I want to start a boudoir division of my business. I will be shooting a promotional boudoir session and working with an event stylist. The event stylist will promote the fashion show we plan on having. And I hope that will result in some bookings.

December 12: Body Integration

Prompt: This year, when did you feel the most integrated with your body? Did you have a moment where there wasn’t mind and body, but simply a cohesive YOU, alive and present? (Author: Patrick Reynolds)

When we started doing P90X this past Spring, I felt in tune with my body. P90X is not for the faint of heart, and it definitely takes just as much mental effort as it does physical effort. And certainly, during Plyometrics, I felt alive and present, and yes, a bit winded.

Another time this year that I felt alive and present was during Dallas’ little snow “storm”. The following day my husband and I played in the snow and it was awesome!
